BOOK ARTS CLASS: Casebound Journal Book

In this hands-on class, students learn the fundamental techniques of traditional bookbinding with a hardcover book created from start to finish. The final book is perfect for a sketchbook, mood tracker, travel log, stamp art, gratitude journal, diary, or whatever else they can think of.

First, students familiarize themselves with folding signatures and sewing a text block (the pages) with a stitch pattern. From there they make a case (the hardcover) from book board, book cloth, and decorative paper. Finally they'll learn to "case in" the text block (create the book itself), combining all the parts into a fully bound, professional-looking book.

This class is ideal for folks with some experience in bookmaking or hand-sewing and those interested in the art of handmade books. All materials are provided, and students will leave with their own completed hardcover book.

Class is two days: on day 1 (August 9, 9 to 1), which is four hours, students sew the text block; followed by day 2 (August 16, 10 to 1), which is 3 hours, where students make the case and case in the text block.

Nikki was delightful and enthusiastic. Her preparation was awesome, it was nice not having to bring supplies to my first class with her. Her knowledge of book arts is extensive & her artistry is exciting. All in all it was an inspiring & happy day.
